304ステンレス鋼を対316比較するとき、異なった適用のために使用するどれをことにするときそれら両方に考慮するべき賛否両論がある。例えば、316ステンレス鋼は塩を加えるために304および他の腐食物より抵抗力がある。従って頻繁に化学薬品または海洋の環境への露出に直面するプロダクトを製造すれば、316はよりよい選択である。
一方では強い耐食性を必要としないプロダクトを製造すれば、304は実用的で、経済的な選択である。多くの適用のために、304および316は実際に交換可能である。
